Micronutrient Requirements
Laboratory Test Will Determine Your Micronutrient Requirements
Levels of certain nutrients have historically been measured in the serum (blood.) Static measurements, such as serum assays, can be transitory, reflecting an individual’s nutritional status over a narrow window of time. Technology developed by the University of Texas and offered by Spectracell Laboratories, measures the intracellular function of selected vitamins, mineral, antioxidants, and other essential micronutrients within your white blood cells (lymphocytes). Since lymphocytes carry an individual’s nutritional history for a period of four to six months, these tests can reveal nutrient status over a period of time. The results obtained uncover deficiencies that standard serum tests may miss. If not corrected, such deficiencies could impair your health by contributing to the overall development and/or progression of chronic disease.
There is overwhelming evidence documenting that vitamin, mineral, antioxidant, and other essential micronutrient deficiencies suppress the requirements of another. Eating a balanced diet, exercising, and taking a multi-vitamin doesn’t guarantee that you are supplying your body with what it needs.
WHO SHOULD HAVE THIS TEST DONE? In an ideal world, EVERYONE! It is highly recommended for anyone with a chronic illness, such as arthritis, cancer, heart disease, fatigue, Fibromyalgia, those on medications; alcohol consumers and recreational drug uses; those who over-exercise or have sedentary habits, and smokers. Both males and females should be tested prior to conceiving, pregnancy and/or nursing mothers, and those individuals requiring surgery.
Several insurance companies cover this test. Check with your plan administrator to see if it is covered. Blood is drawn in the office and results are available within two weeks. The results will be explained to you in detail, a treatment plan will be established, and you will be re-tested in 4-to-6 months to determine if your deficiencies have been corrected.
