As Emperor of the world I’m not restricted by the political realities of the world. I’m free to do and say whatever I choose. I don’t have to concern myself with the will of the people.
Fear not however, I’m a benevolent dictator. Unlike dictators throughout history, my purpose is to make a better world for us all.
I’m really not so delusional to believe that I am an Emperor nor do I actually think that me being an Emperor would be a good idea. The idea of being an emperor has it’s roots in debates with my mother when I was growing up. I would think of some idea, (an original one I always thought) and my mother would take a contrary view, pointing out the problems or roadblocks in reality, challenged me to defend my idea while encouraging me to improve on the idea. We still do this to this day.
But the actual use of the title “Emperor” didn’t come until I had my own children. Often when we were discussing the topics of the day from wide ranging topics including politics, technology, religion, music, taxes, social responsibility, you name it, one or more of my kids heard “If I was Emperor for a day I would…”. This is an acknowledgement that no matter how “good” an idea is it has to be practical in reality. I like to use Self-Officiated sports as a perfect example. “Call your own fouls” in Basketball may seem like a good idea but it defies human nature to want to win.
Now it’s evolved to the point that as Emperor I’m challenging others to defend why they think something won’t work. I look for changes that could be made to make an idea workable that isn’t workable in today’s reality.
I think we are at a time in world history where humanity needs new, big, creative ideas that can inspire people to make the changes necessary to move forward. I’m not so arrogant or naive to believe even for an instant that I’m going to change the world, or even a mind. My hope is that something I write may inspire someone in a better position than me to do something that will change the world or change minds.
I’m not interested in holding office myself. I’m not a player. My role is on the sidelines, the press box, or in the bleachers. I like watching, discussing, reporting and breathlessly opining politics, politicians and public policy.
